Disagreements between Albanian and Macedonian judges in the Constitutional Court regarding the discriminatory provisions of the “Safe City” project—which foresee that SMS notifications be sent only in the Macedonian language—once again demonstrate an openly ethnocentric approach in the functioning of state institutions.
This is not an isolated incident. It is the third case within just a few months in which constitutional equality and the multiethnic character of the state have been challenged through actions taken by state institutions.
We call on Albanian political representatives in the government to respond immediately and to use all legal and institutional mechanisms to halt this dangerous discriminatory practice, while also demanding accountability from any official who violates the Constitution.
North Macedonia is not the property of a single ethnic group. Albanians make up more than 30 percent of the country’s population and are equal state-forming citizens.
The Albanian-American Organization for North Macedonia strongly condemns any attempt at institutional discrimination against the Albanian language and emphasizes that the continuation of such policies only deepens divisions and risks the country’s long-term stability.
